Maryland Department of Juvenile Justice: Represented a class of 890 juveniles who were physically abused in a boot camp run by the state of Maryland. Restitution and justice for 890 adolescents who were beaten and abused at the hands of the Department of Juvenile Justice.

$4 million settlement as well as a fund to cover tuition costs toward higher education, both paid for by the State of Maryland.

Fly Ash: Murphy PA represents the members of the community of Gambrills, MD.  With Murphy PA,  they filed the first class action suit for fly ash dump contamination against energy giant Constellation Power Source Generation, Inc. Fly ash pollution has contaminated the water supply in Gambrills. The areas wells were polluted and residents began experiencing serious health problems. 

 $54 million settlement which included an injunction against future dumping of fly ash at the site, remediation of the site at the power company’s expense, establishment of a trust for payment of damages suffered by adjacent property owners and remediation of adjoining projects.


Wells V. Chevy Chase Bank, F.S.B.:

In January ,1999 a class action was filed on behalf of, ultimately, more than 750,000 credit card customers of Chevy Chase Bank charging the Bank with violating the terms of its own Credit Card agreements.

The Murphy Firm pursued this case for eight years.  The class prevailed in two separate appeals to Maryland's highest court and succesfully opposed a writ of certiorari to the U.S. Supreme Court. 

The ability of credit card customers to hold a Bank to the terms of its contract, the roll-back of improperly increased interest rates and recovery of over-charges Protracted settlement negotiations resulted in a class recovery of more than $16 million and, importantly, the Bank's cooperation in efforts to repair damages done class members' credit records.
